You can contact us using this contact-form.

Portal consists of eight modules, which can be seen under particular titles on the main site:

  • LATEST NEWS - it is a set of current information about individual places and institutions in the Silesian Province. It is also about the most important events in each place and institution; it is about awarded prizes and announced contests.

  • EVENTS - unit advertises events organized in the Silesian Province, presents basic information about their schedule and organizers. This unit is electronically updated version of the "The Cultural Calendar of the Silesian Province" which is in full available at the unit "Database."

  • REPERTOIRE - Unit presents repertoires from theatres (drama, puppet, and music), operas, philharmonic orchestras, museums, art galleries and cinemas.

  • PUBLICATIONS - unit consists of information concerning cultural magazines and fiction editorial novelties in the Silesian Province.

  • ON THE BORDER - this unit contains information concerning cultural events on Polish, Czech and Slovak borderland including Euro regions such as Beskidy Mountains, Silesia and part of Silesia which is called Śląsk Cieszyński.

  • DATABASE - this unit is a set of basic information about the cultural institutions (addresses, phone numbers, short descriptions, etc.) in the Silesian Province excluding libraries (information about them you can find on the site www.bs.katowice.pl) , about the amateur artistic groups which work in that region. It also gives information about non- governmental organizations which operate here on the cultural field. Moreover it is the "The Cultural Calendar of Silesian Province" which is full of juxtaposes about events, contests and other cultural events not including repertoires from theatres, philharmonic orchestras, cinemas and art galleries (those you can find at the unit Repertoires).

  • SILESIAN CULTURAL PHOTO SET - an archive of series of pictures from various domains of voivodeship cultural life.

  • REGULATIONS - advertisements on competitions, adhesion forms, etc.

Information on database is arranged according to administrative division of the region to counties, towns, municipalities and villages. At the same time according division of the kind of activity presented by individual groups was taken into consideration as well. Exploration is possible both ways: through the map or through the browser. Registration is free of charges. To fill in the form is one of the required points (Add to Database) or you can contact "Regional Cultural Centre" in Bielsko-Biała.
The browser on the main page allows search for all needed information in all units.
The Regional Culture Centre in Bielsko-Biała is the webmaster of the "The Booklet of the Silesian Province Culture". Under the address www.silesiakultura.pl “The Booklet" is accessible since December 2005; earlier under this address was the "Database about culture in the Silesian Province" which is now one of the six units of this portal.

Portal is supported financially by The Ministry of Culture and National Heritage in the framework of the operational programs: "Development of Local Initiatives" (2005) and "Patronage 2006"

Contact us, please. We wait for information from organizers of events, contests, exhibitions or other cultural events. We wait for your opinions concerning current cultural events and also about the portal itself.
The Regional Cultural Centre is responsible for the contents and operation of the site about culture in the Silesian Province.

The culture in the Silesian province

The Silesian Province is a multicultural area formed by inhabitants of Polish, German, Czech and Jewish origin. The main feature of this region is differentiation of its major cultural areas: the Upper - Silesia, Zagłebie (the Basin), the Silesian Beskidy and the Żywiec Beskidy and Częstochowa region.
The examples are small wooden churches of unique construction found in three regions in Poland but in the Silesian Province there are more of them than in entire Europe. There are also monuments of industrial culture such as factory complexes in Giszowiec, Nikiszowiec, Sosnowiec and underground excavations in Tarnowskie Góry, Zabrze and Rybnik. The number of technological monuments is estimated at several thousands. In addition there are monuments of habitable architecture (e.g. 38 urban matches, the Secession of Bytom) and landscape arrangements (among them 98 parks). Borders which crossed this region were changed many times but they left distinctive military architecture monuments ranging from fortified castles situated in the Kraków - Częstochowa Upland to the Silesian fortified region dated in the 1930s.

The "Technology monuments route in the Silesian Province" waits for all interested parties; there are old mines, steelworks, power stations and factories on the route which are the important part of history and industrial traditions of the region. Saved from pulling down or devastation these monuments of industrial heritage are tourist attractions of the region. Additionally wooden churches signed on the "Wooden architecture route" and the "Military architecture route" which is still being elaborated, are also worth visiting.

After some years of stagnation caused by changes in the economy steadily we can observe increase of activity among professional and amateur artistic circles. The sign of it is the number of new artistic groups, societies and funds and the rich offer of cultural institutions. Well known not only in the country are artists who are connected with the Academy of Music and the Academy of Fine Arts like Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, Wojciech Kilar, Krystian Zimerman, Eugeniusz Knapik, Tadeusz Grabowski and Roman Kalarus. The significant part plays the group of artists connected with film and theatre like film directors Kazimierz Kutz and Lech Majewski. Young artists also have something to add especially Magda Piekorz - film director and Wojciech Kuczok - novelist.

The Silesian Province is a place of many important international and nationwide events. There is: Grzegorz Fietelberg International Competition for Conductors and the Nationwide Festival of Directing Art "Interpretacje" (Interpretations) in Katowice, the International Festival of Sacred Music "Gaude Mater" in Częstochowa, the Annual International Contemporary Dance Conference and Performance Festival in Bytom, the International Festival of Puppetry Art, the Festival of Polish Composers and the Biennale "Bielska Jesień" (Autumn in Bielsko) in Bielsko-Biała, the Beskidy Highlanders' Week of Culture in the Beskidy Mountains and the Upper-Silesian Art Festival in Upper-Silesia.
18 culture institutions are submitted to the local authorities of the Silesian Province. They are presented in a few words below.

  • Ars Cameralis Silesiae Superioris
  • Silesian Library
  • The Centre of Cultural Heritage of Upper- Silesia
  • The Silesian Philharmonic Orchestra
  • The Upper-Silesian Ethnographic Park in Chorzów
  • The Museum in Bielsko-Biała
  • The Museum of Coal Mining in Zabrze
  • The Upper-Silesian Museum in Bytom
  • The Silesian Museum in Katowice
  • The Castle Museum in Pszczyna
  • The Opera House in Bytom
  • The Regional Culture Centre in Bielsko-Biała
  • The Regional Culture Centre in Częstochowa
  • The Regional Culture Centre in Katowice
  • Silesia Film in Katowice
  • The Entertainment Theatre in Chorzów
  • Teatr Śląski im. Stanisława Wyspiańskiego w Katowicach
  • Zespół Pieśni i Tańca "Śląsk"

The activity of mentioned above institutions influences significantly the condition of culture in the Province. It is a valuable supplement and enlargement of initiatives which are undertaken by hundreds of institutions submitted to municipal, commune and county authorities. An enormous power over the cultural life of the Province have also numerous and very dynamic non-government organizations. Private art galleries and clubs as well have a lot to offer.
The Silesian Province invites all interested parties to culture institutions in our region. Further information is possible to access at other sites of this portal and directly in stated institutions or at their websites.
Foreigners who are interested in receiving specific information concerning up-to-date cultural offer or wishing for mutual cooperation please use the form named “Contact foreigners" at the main page of this website.
